Its called "ghosting" it used to happen on old analogue equipment, check out David Bowie "lets dance" album for same - in fact if you listen to a lot of older albums its all over the place. There are some that claim that this was the early use of backwards reverb by Mr Page but I think its the "ghosting" as he really only started employing that effect around the time of Zeppelin II- hope that helps.....
