In my opinion it's not something that was invented but that evolved over time. I could say anyone and it would still just be an opinion. Hasil Adkins, Jerry lee Lewis the list could go on forever and everyone would still think what they wanted to anyhow. It's more of a attitude than the music they are playing.

the stooges started in 1967, and they were like, the godfathers of punk! (i'm sorta astounded that people are doubting the existance/punkness of iggy and the stooges.)

there actually WAS a band called The Stooges (beginning in the late seventies, early '80's). I have some of their CD's....they definitely weren't punk, though!
