Actually they both played the same kind of guitar, and both had similar styles of playing a similar kind of music. srv even covered a bunch of hendrix tracks doing them much justice (see voodoo chile, little wing - which i think he did better than Jimi). They both played what I would call a 'loose and fast' kind of blues-rock.

Actually they have a lot more in common than just that. They are both claimed to be guitar gods and legends, they both are a lot influential, they both had a great guitar tehnique and tone, they were both very talented, they both played like they were not from this world, they were both very passionate, they both brought the electric guitar to a new and high level and at the end they both died tragically very young and way before their time. They both could make and achieve so much more.

Stevie Ray Vaughan and Hendrix had nothing in a common except for they played the electric guitar and they tapped into the vein of great music during their eras.

Like Hendrix, SRV mastered BOTH lead AND rhythm guitar and could combine them effortlessly.
