Chaplin was daring with his ideas and movies. The Great Dictator, Mr. Verdoux... i haven't seen too much Keaton stuff but i do like him and i think he took great risk for film with his stunts, Charlie did also but perhaps not as much because it was a different style of performance. but in his ideas, in his movies a the time, concidering all the public scrutiny he was going through, i think it was very daring.

and this is in fact, what made them both so great and why i have a bit more of a soft spot for Chaplin for coming up with this stuff!

i think both had tremendous respect for each other. i think when his daughter's boyfriend said that to Chaplin all those years later, concidering everything he had gone through afterwards, when the bf told Chaplin this, he was hurt by the comment. but this was years after both Chaplin and Keaton were on top of the box office.
