I always thought that the "ring" was her eye, or eyes. Once you look into her eyes, she can somehow implant imagery and thoughts that are so terrifying that people die of fright. That's how I've thought of it since I first watched this movie. This movie scared me deeply, more than anything I've ever seen. It's unrelenting evil.
