Yes, you are right: jazz is a realm where it is content, not the form, that is especially dominating. And if that content is authentic, the units in which it expresses itself will always be unique in their own way. It is such a shame that technique is being so often overestimated as THE way to mastership, whereas it is just a tool, although a necessary one...

A close imitator might be possible, but not a copy. And really, why would we want a copy? We can learn a lot from Oscar, and we can certainly enjoy listening, but ultimately the joy of jazz is the chance to express our own musical character.

I agree that we can achieve anything with the right stuff. But although others can and do improvise as well as Oscar, I'm not sure anyone could ever improvise the same way. Like speech, improvised music comes out of a person's entire knowledge and experience - the same things that make them the person that they are.

Everything is possible to whoever has strong will and sincerity -- the two indispensable components for great accomplishments.
Also, I think, everything humans have achieved is possible to achieve. So, no promises about flying...but playing jazz like Peterson IS possible!
