As Turkey's ruling AK party faces charges that it has sought to undermine the country's secular system, Inside Story looks at the possible repercussions for Turkey's political future and its bid to join the EU and asks if it would be democratically valid to preserve secularity if the majority of the population were opposed.

The AKP has disavowed any intention of "imposing the Shari'a" (or imposing anything else, for that matter) countless times. Remember, this is a party that won nearly one out of every two votes in the last general election (46.6%). They have a huge popular mandate; they are not in the business of "imposing" anything. I'm glad you're free to practise your religion in the US. The AKP's great crime is to promote such freedoms in Turkey. (response to shayshay)

fuck turkey. their so called constitution is fake, why wont they be like the U.S where people can wear, worship, drink, eat whatever they want while still keeping religion and state separate. they will have big problems if they try to keep Muslims like that. which will be the largest religion in the world in few years.

A state should be deifined by its people not by religious beliefs. All that religion does is separate people and turn them against eachother in endless conflicts.A perfect example is the former Yugoslavia where the same people killed eachother because some where catolics some orthodox and some muslim.

Religion has no bussines in state affairs. Last thing that Turkey needs is a bunch of islamist retards taking over and turning a beutifull country with much potential into another Islamic Republic Shitholle. Secularism is the real way for progress and a better world.Look at the developed countries and tell me how many of them are Christian Republics or Budist Republics.
