Next to Strange Fruit this has to be my favourite Billie video and recording too. How I wish that I still had the beautiful colour poster of her with an orchid in her hair that I had back in the 70's. It'd take prime place nowadays, and framed to whit.

That's the most ridiculous comment I've read on YouTube. Placing Britney, Madonna and even Jessica Simpson above Billy - my oh my! The mind boggles.

I totally agree with you that she had the good fortune to work with great musicians. Absolutely. Arriving in New York at the height of the Harlem Renaissance was to be in the right place at the right time. But great musicians chose to work with her. She turned some very mediocre songs into hits with her interpretation. And, though the liquor board eventually banned her from playing nightclubs in New York, she could still play theatres. Musicians & fans continued to seek her out.

oh everyone idolizes the dead, she was ok, mostly she had good material to work with and great musicians.

Billie Holiday's record speaks for itself; nobody needs to defend it. And I'm not merely referring to her popularity among those who enjoy music, but the adoration she enjoyed from fellow artists who were as mesmerized as I am by the genius she had for getting inside of a song and delivering it with an interpretation, with a timing and tonality and feeling that is unparalleled in jazz singing. What puzzles me, yimhertoday, is what you or anybody could possibly gain from putting her down.

no problem..people need to know the TRUTH in the 21st century...instead of all the LIES that people perpetuate on artists who have accomplished IMMORTALITY..through sharing their lives..and passions...instead of sitting on the sidelines ENVIOUS..trying to play it off by being insulting...BRAVO..TO THE LADY...
