アリジゴクを二匹飼っ います。左の巣穴に蟻を投入すると一度は必死に虎口を逃れたものの、再びすり鉢状のトラップにはまり万事休す。こうして観察してみると、落とし穴の中心で待ち構えるアリジゴクは巷でよく言われるように這い上がろうとする蟻を目掛けて砂粒をぶつけている訳ではないと気付きます（アリジゴクは狩りの最中に体の向きを変えない）。アリジゴクが作る巣穴は粉体工学的にも優れており、すり鉢状の斜面は堆積安息角（angle of repose）という不安定な 衡状態にあるらしい。アリジゴクは大顎で砂粒を適当に跳ね飛ばして土砂崩れを起こすきっかけを作っているだけなのです。それにしても素晴らしいですね。
