Review of "Report on Affiliate Management Software"

Getting good objective information about complex ecommerce
solutions such as shopping carts, merchant accounts and affiliate management
software is difficult to say the least.
For years Ralph Wilson
(www.wilsonweb.com) has been one of the most reliable and relatively objective
sources for this kind of information. I recently renewed my membership at www.wilsonweb.com and along with the renewal
came a "free" download of several of his in-depth studies of various software
programs in this field.
One of the downloads is Wilson's "Report
on Affiliate Management Software" (ROAMS). I specifically wanted this report
because I am shopping around for an affiliate management provider.
This
book covers a wide range of programs and provides actual user input (Wilson has
direct reports from 90 affiliate management program users). It is certainly
helpful to have the author's summary of all the main types of affiliate
management solutions. He breaks these down into-
Commission-based - where you pay a percentage of your sales to the provider.
- Fee-based - where you pay a flat fee for a certain number
of transactions
- CGI Programs - where the merchant runs software on the
company's own server
- E-Commerce Solutions that bundle an affiliate program with
other e-commerce services such as a shopping cart
At the time of writing (May, 2001) commission-based
solutions were the most popular among respondents.
As I mention above, this book was
produced in May, 2001, and has not been updated since. So the information is at
least 4 years old. A lot of water has
passed under the bridge since then. That means this book is only useful for
helping to understand the comparisons and get a sense of what people were
looking for in such a package.
But I suspect it is useless for helping
you make a final decision. While this area (ecommerce) is possibly not as fast
moving as some, you simply cannot assume that any of the information is still
accurate after a four year period.
While you wait for the revised edition of "Report on
Affiliate Management Software from Ralph Wilson, here are a couple other
